Restaurants Report San Sebastian, Hondarribia,

San Sebastian

La Cuchara de San Telmo: Very classic style food done well. It is possible to get seated at tables outside of the bar. One of the waiters will take your name and put on the waitlist. To get pinxtos, just "line up" by the bar, the bartender will ask you what you want to order when it is your term. They will take your drink and food order and your name. The line is long, so it's better to order everything at once. They will call out to your name when each dish is ready. You can come by to grab the food.  Tables outside are only for rations (full plate). the price/sizes for these plates are about doubling the pinxtos> it 's less chaotic than Pinxtos. AND menu has English!! recommendations: suckling pigs. veal is a bit too heavy, tenderloin has too much tendons (good flavor, but hard to chew).

Zeruko: Get there early for lunch, so the line is shorter.  You can ask for plates from bartender upon entering. Use the plate to get all the food you want. They will take (your plate) back to the kitchen to warm up the food and add some sauces.  Getting table is possible. Might need to share tables with people. Definitely try fish.  Some of the hot dishes need to be "ordered" from menu. Not on display. For example, I had foie gras with apple, cranberry, and couple other sauses. There is ONE bartender that will keep track of what you have ordered and what you have got. This is my favorite. Many more seafood dishes and very innovative.

La Vina: Cheesecake. Didn't try anything else. Two big pieces of cheesecake. 5 euro. Pretty good. Go there early (during the day). This place gets quite crowded at night. I think it opens later than many other places.

La Cepa: One of the few places that open on Monday night. Known for their Jamon Iberia.  If you are a small party and don't want too much jamon, go for the sandwich. (2.50 euro each).  Just get plates from bartender. Tell them what you want for the hot dish.  Let them know when you grab one of the cold dish , so they remember to charge.  THe wine here is super cheap.

Gran Sol (Hondabarria) : my favorite pinxto so far ! Upon enter, ask bartender for plates and English menu.  Put cold items on the plate. Bring it to bartender. So they will record.  Order hot items. Give them your name. They will call out your name when it is ready. Getting a table is possible!
While cold dishes are good, the hot dishes is what makes this place stand out. I ordered every single hot item on the menu.
Very creative items. My favorite is a foie gras with cheese and caramel sugar.  I never imagine foie gras taste so good with cheese! and the sauce is sweet and salty.  This  is a creative combination.
Another favorite is false sushi. Using roasted seaweed sheet to wrap some mixture (of seafood?) and with some Japanese seaweed seasoning.   The eggs are great.  This place is also cheaper than the places in San Sebastian!
